Earlier this month, a group of LMNS musicians came together at Scottish Opera in Glasgow for a special training day led by educator, performer and Creative Health researcher, Todd Henkin.
The session, funded by Creative Scotland’s YMI Access to Music Making, offered a practical, collaborative space to explore participatory songwriting – and to reflect on the power of music-making in community and healthcare settings.
Our musicians were encouraged to bring their instruments, and the day included opportunities to play together and explore shared musical ideas. A key part of the session involved building a word ladder – a collaborative process that gradually shaped a group-written song. Many of the photos and videos from the day capture this creative moment in action, offering a lovely glimpse into the group’s energy and openness.
Originally from Philadelphia, Todd has performed widely with his band The Great Unknown and led songwriting projects with students, families, refugees, and community leaders – from classrooms and hospitals to collaborations with Live Music Now, Carnegie Hall, and Breathe Arts Health Research.
He recently completed a master’s in Creative Health at UCL and now focuses on co-creating songs with parents, caregivers, and adults living with mental illness. His work is rooted in the belief that music and storytelling can transform how we connect and care.
We’re grateful to Todd for joining us as part of our Play at the Yard programme, and to the LMNS musicians who took part with such openness. It truly was a session full of connection and creative spark.
